Introduction
Dear reader,
This book is about the art of being present to yourself, to the people who see you, and to the life you are here to build.
My mother always told me I was observant. Even as a child, I could feel things before I could explain them, read people before they had spoken, notice what was off before anyone else had named it. I didn't understand the gift of that then. I only knew that when I listened to it, it never led me wrong.
That instinct has been the most consistent guide of my life. When I listened, I felt settled. When I chose to override it, rationalizing my way toward something that wasn't sitting right, I always understood, usually too late, that I had gone against my own better judgment. Ignoring your attention is not ignorance. It is a deliberate turning away from something you already know.
This collection moves through three layers of attention.
The first is the attention we owe ourselves. Before we can truly see anyone else, we have to learn to see ourselves honestly, in this body, with these instincts, these patterns, these quiet longings we have learned to talk ourselves out of.
The second is the attention we give to the people we love. Real love is not a feeling that arrives and stays. It is a daily choice to notice, to remember the details, to show up with consistency.
The third is the attention we give to the world. Legacy is about understanding that you are one of millions of people moving through the world with something specific to offer, and choosing, with intention, to offer it.
How we pay attention is how we love.
How we love is how we live.
And how we live is our legacy.
With all due attention,Yael
